John Pellam is an unemployed, divorced film composer who agrees to ghost-write the memoirs of New York City's Deputy Commissioner of Police. The two men hit it off immediately and the D.C.P.'s wife takes a liking to Pellam as well when they meet in her home for dinner one night. The next day Pellam learns that the Deputy Commissioner has been in a horrific car accident that leaves him in critical condition. He then agrees to be put on retainer by the D.C., mainly so he can spend more time with his family when he is not tending to his client during hospital visits, but also because his account is running dry. Pellam begins to investigate the accident and finds it peculiar that the D.C. was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, although according to witnesses none of his injuries (all of which he has sustained on his face) could have been caused by that fact alone. Pellam then meets Agnes Towers (whom he nicknamed "The Bone Collector" due to her ability to find human remains) who teaches him how to reconstruct crime scenes with different elements like mud, water, paint, etc. Later on it is revealed that The Bone Collector was an undercover officer posing as a homeless person. D.C.P. died in the accident, but the real D.C. was arrested for his death and is currently being held at Riker's Island prison awaiting trial with no bail allowed, due to the fact that he was leaving nothing to chance with his memoirs, which are said to incriminate him in a conspiracy surrounding "Something Bad". Agnes joins forces with Pellam to find out what exactly is this "Something Bad" and how can they stop it before it's too late?
